Australia shot to another record breaking Women’s T20 World Cup win after winning by 7 wickets. Another record from Sunday, the Lord’s final of the Women’s World T20 was a sell out. England’s target of 151 was met after a 2nd wicket partnership of 100 runs by Beth Mooney (64) and Phoebe Litchfield (48), with 17 balls to spare. Australia now has 7 Women’s World T20 titles and defeated England in every World T20 and ODI final. England finished 150-4 after Australia applied pressure with tight bowling and superb fielding, and were thankful to an 80 run partnership from Nat Sciver-Brunt (58, not out) and Freya Kemp (44, not out) which pulled the score from 70-4. In what was Australia’s first T20 World Cup final at Lord’s, Kim Garth (1-20) and Lucy Hamilton (1-19) were the standout bowlers.
England vs Australia
Bidding to win their first major title since winning the World Cup on home soil in 2017, the England team started this one with the unfortunate memory of their 16-0 drubbing in the last multi-format Ashes. This time, the England team looked at least 20 runs short of a competitive total.
Australia had successfully chased down 171 the day before in another group match against India at Lord’s.
Georgia Voll offered up a chance early by attempting to slog the first ball of the Australian innings, bowled by Charlie Dean, but England’s Lauren Bell struck next and got the breakthrough with Australia at 17-1.
Runs started to pile on after that. Australia’s captain Mooney, who already had a good day keeping, had no problems guiding Bell to the right for one of the seven fours in her innings of 38 balls and belting a half-century.
Litchfield followed with a sweep for four and a bigger shot over Dean for six.
Both the finalists had yet to taste a loss during the tournament and Sciver-Brunt had promised to go “toe to toe,” but the superiority in skill was evident and Australia was sitting comfortably to win at 68-1 after the six over powerplay.
Dean finally got Litchfield out after their partnership of 100 runs from 67 balls with the score at 117-2.
Mooney was out after a failed lbw appeal against Sophie Ecclestone, who bowled the winning runs in the legside fiasco.
Earlier, Australia had a wonderful stroke of luck after winning the toss, with Amy Jones, after hitting her fifth single-digit score in six innings, edging Jones to Hamilton in the gully.
It was the left-arm quick’s first wicket of the tournament after bowling economically.
But Sciver-Brunt who had brought her son Theo to the field during the pre-match to participate in the semi-match, cover drove Hamilton beautifully for a four on his very first ball.
Veteran opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge was very unlucky to get out on eight after she gloved Annabel Sutherland to the legside, and was well caught, for the second time, by a diving Mooney.
Alice Capsey briefly turned the unfortunate luck of the batting side with a short knock of 23 before getting bowled after attempting a reverse sweep which was missing the line completely, by Molineux.
England’s winning 2017 captain, who was a former captain, was out plumb, a victim of Garth’s leg cutter, for a very low score of 2.
There was little doubt left in the mind of the spectators after big hitting Left Handed batter Kemp struck several boundaries and even struck a six after a boundary on the last ball of the innings bowled by Molineux.
But England’s total, after losing their record of winning every major global tournament they had hosted (a record which dated back to the inaugural 1973 Women’s ODI World Cup), looked inadequate.
