Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows no signs of slowing down. Tom Holland’s film is breaking records shortly after its release.
Sony Pictures reported that Brand New Day broke a record for the best first week box office sales in history. After one week, the film sold over $500 million in North America. Brand New Day broke another record, selling the fastest $500 million in North America by beating Avengers: Endgame, which sold $500 million in eight days.
Brand New Day is breaking records faster than anyone thought possible. Sony reported that Brand New Day sold the best first box office sales on a Tuesday and a Monday. There is a lot of competition for the fastest film sales to $1,000,000,000. Brand New Day is in second place to Avengers: Endgame for fastest sales to $1,000,000,000. Brand New Day achieved this goal in six days.
In the days leading up to the release of Brand New Day, the competition for largest box office sales for a film’s debut in North America was between Brand New Day and Endgame. Brand New Day broke the record for fastest $1,000,000,000 in sales from a worldwide debut, with a first week total of $1,000,000,000, while Endgame’s total was $1.2 billion. Brand New Day’s production budget was $225 million.
The film from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Cretton also features Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, and sees Marvel Comics’ iconic character left to suffer a bleak solitary existence in the absence of those he loves before an intangible adversary arrives to hunt him down.
In a discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures president Tom Rothman said that public interest for both Holland and Zendaya is not a phenomenon that is going to die down anytime soon.
“Interest in them is not because they are stars,” the executive noted, “They are stars because they are interesting, and they are interesting because they are interesting and talented and hard-working. They are kind, wonderful, humble and good people. They are nice because they have earned every single moment of their success.”
As summer draws to a close, Sony anticipates Brand New Day will rein in audiences beyond the first week as the competition includes One Night Only, Super Troopers 3 and Ice Cream Man.
