He grew up in a horse riding family. His father worked with horses as a rider, trainer, and coach. His mother worked in a western store and taught riding lessons. Bob also became a horse riding coach and a great influence for future equestrian sports.

Avila was just five years old when he fell in love with the world of competitive horse showing. He grew up idolizing the likes of Don Dodge, Tony Amaral Sr, Harry Rose Sr, Clyde Kennedy, and Jimmy Williams. Back in an interview, Avila said, “They were at all the shows, too, and literally helped raise me. They were true horsemen. I learned things from each one of them starting at a very young age that otherwise would have taken a lifetime to learn.” He continued, “Back in those days, no one specialized in any particular discipline, so these trainers had to be able to train anything and everything, and they really could. To this day, I enjoy producing a good all-around horse, and that comes partly from the influence of my childhood heroes.”

Bob Avila Yellowstone

At the age of 20, Avila was given a job opportunity from his idol, NRCHA Hall of Fame member Tony Amaral, and continued to pursue the career on his own once he left. In his career, he earned more than 37 championships, including world and reserve world championships in a wide variety of events. He competed in Reining, Working Cow Horse, Western Riding, and Halter. He changed the world of competitive horse showing, especially reining and cow horse, with his extensive and successful career.

Avila earned his status as an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider and won major championships, like the Snaffle Bit Futurity and the Worlds Greatest Horseman events, on three and two occasions, respectively. Avila won the Magnificent 7 Reined Cow Horse competition on three occasions and is only one of two competitors to win both the $100,000 NRCHA Open Futurity and the $100,000 NRHA Open Futurity. Lastly, Avila is also in extremely elite company of only one other horseman that has won the NRCHA Futurity more than twice.

As a founding member of the AQHA Professional Horsemen’s Committee, Avila became the first Professional Horseman of the Year in 1995. He has been an AQHA judge for over 20 years and has served on the judges’ committee.

Avila’s career is one for the ages, but his biggest impact comes from the trainers that have been mentored by him. Avila quoted, “Horses have given me everything I have. Quarter Horses have helped make me what I am. They have been my life’s work, and I owe them everything.”

Avila is one of the horseman in the industry. He has won championships in AQHA, NRHA, NRCHA, and NCHA. His best-known horses are Major Bonanza, Major Investment, The Major Leaguer, Mist N Smoke, Smoke Em Okie, Wright On, Smart Lil Calboy, Smart Zanolena, and Chics Magic Potion. Avila won the World’s Greatest Horseman on Paid By Chic in 2000 and Light N Fine in 2007.

Avila and Dana

Avila and Dana sold their ranch in Temecula, CA after 18 years of ownership and moved to Scottsdale, AZ, where he lived until he passed. Like most horsemen, Avila’s activity in the horse industry continued strong into his 70s. His talents extended beyond the barn. Avila owned a Western performance horse uniqueness. He developed products and marketing during his performance in his industry to support his career and provide income for his retirement.

Avila’s extended help was especially for non-pro riders and non-pro trainers. He taught the young people who worked for him and he was known for coaching trainers in the industry throughout his retirement. This assisted his industry to create a love for the trade and a love and respect for the animals they trained.

Bob Avila’s impact on training horses and the industry of equestrianism isn’t in question. His co-workers hold him in high esteem for his varied talent in the industry and his ability to be proficient in the multiple areas of industry horse training and compete throughout his career.
